Live from Blacksburg!

I’m in Blacksburg, Virginia at the Donaldson Brown Hotel for the International Symposium on Web Services for Bioinformatics and Computational Biology. This is a significantly smaller conference than the last one I attended in Kansas city a few weeks ago, but looks to be significantly more interesting too.

I ran into a little trouble on the way here. As it turns out, airport securiy doesn’t like it when you give them an expired driver’s license. They did let me on the plane, but flagged my boarding pass, resulting in my luggage and my person being thoroughly searched, swabbed, and turned inside-out. I’m pretty sure I’m on a terrorist watch list now (reminds me of a recent episode of This American Life), and since my license has been expired for over a month, I have to retake the written test at the DMV. That is assuming I actually get back home. All the hullabaloo described above took place at the Sioux Falls airport. I hope the folks at Roanoke Regional Airport are at least as understanding when I leave on friday. Lindsey assured me that if I get stuck out here, she and Tommy will drive out and get me.

After the reception at VBI, we ate at Poor Billy’s Seafood Restaurtant located at 201 N Main St. Go there. And don’t be afraid of ordering sushi in a colelge bar.

I will post some more conference-specific stuff tomorrow.

  1. I’m not so sure I still will drive out there. Maybe I’ll just send you a bus ticket. :)

  2. Wow, to actually get to go to conferences (and two in the last couple weeks at that) must be nice. :) One of these days my department will cough up the funds for me to go to one…

  3. […] After allowing my driver’s license to expire (and finding out about it an a very inopportune time), I found myself preparing to take the state’s written test for drivers-to-be. […]
