It’s all about the gameplay

I’m going to go right ahead and nominate Far Cry for the I-know-I’m-going-to-be-banned-from-the-wired-for-saying-this-game-is-better-than-Half-Life award.

We got Tommy to sleep early enough Saturday night for me to play some Far Cry. I mentioned above that this game just might be better than half-life, and indeed I think that’s probably true so far. You might suspect that I’m saying this based solely on graphics quality since HL came out in 1997 in the heyday of the Quake2 engine and Far Cry is basically a glorified tech demo for Cry Tek’s new game engine.

But you would be wrong.

My computer is so old and busted that I play FC at 800x600 on an FX5200. I think you’ll probably agree that with this setup, HL is the better looker, and FC is left with a bad case of frame-rate envy.

Let me explain:

If I want to take out an unsuspecting merc a few hundred yards away, I can ready the sniper rifle and point it in the general direction of the target just fine. But when it comes time to zoom, I can click the zoom button, get all my Christmas shopping done and do my taxes before the frame is fully rendered.

So suffice it so say I’m judging FC soley on gameplay.
